Ancient Greece Travel Brochure - 6th Grade World History



Lesson Summary
Working independently, the students will complete a travel brochure for Ancient Greece.  The brochure will include key geographic features, demographic information, attractions, government description and cultural elements.  When the brochure is completed, the students will present them in assigned groups.  Each group will vote on the best brochure and the winning brochure of each group will present their brochure to the class.  The students will vote on the best travel brochure and the winner will have their brochure on the Wall of Fame.

California Academic Standard(s)
6.4 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious and social structures of the early civilizations of Ancient Greece.

Time Frame
Class Time: (3) 50 minute classes
Total Time: 1 week

Goal
The students will learn critical thinking skills while acquiring knowledge about the political, economic, religious and social structures of Ancient Greece.

Lesson Plan
Anticipatory Set (10 min)
The instructor will write a question on the board that states “If you were going to visit another country, what type of information would you like to know before going?”  The instructor will tell the students to take 2 minutes and think about their answer(s).  The instructor will ask the students to provide answers and the instructor will write the different answers on the board.

Direct Instruction (15 min)
The instructor will show the class examples of travel brochures and explain to the students that they will be completing a travel brochure for Ancient Greece.  The instructor will provide the students a handout with directions for the project.

Directions
Working independently, each student will complete a travel brochure for Ancient Greece.  Each brochure must include the following:


  • Key Geographic Features – Climate, topography, waterways, cities
  • Demographic Information – Population, ethnic groups, religions
  • Key Attractions – At least 5 attractions
  • Government Description – Type of government, political bodies
  • Cultural Elements – Sports, Arts, Music


The goal is to convince the reader of the brochure that Ancient Greece is a great place to visit.  Use your imagination and creativity to make a unique brochure.

To obtain the information to complete the brochure, use your textbooks and the internet.

Guided Practice (20 min)
The instructor will place the students in groups of four.  The instructor will ask the students to complete an outline for a travel brochure for their town.  The students will include: key attractions and geographic features.  The students will have ten minutes to complete the assignment. 

Modeling (5 min)
Using the white board or the overhead, the instructor will complete an outline for the town that he or she lives in to demonstrate how to complete the assignment.

Checks for Understanding (10 min)
The instructor will call on each group to present their brochure outline to the class.

Independent Study (One week or less) 
The students will complete the travel brochure.  As part of completing the travel brochure, the instructor may schedule time at the internet lab of the school. 

Checks for Understanding (40 min)
The students will get into groups of four and present their brochure.  The students will vote on the best brochure in the group.  The students who are the best of the group will present their brochures to the class.  The students will vote by secret ballot to select the best brochure in the class.  The winner will have their brochure placed on the Wall of Fame.

Direct Instruction (10 min)
The instructor will summarize what life was like in Ancient Greece.
